Put Petrol in a Diesel Jaguar X-Type by Mistake?
The engine is safest left off when it hasn't been started since you put petrol in a diesel Jaguar X-Type, and that includes moving it clear of the petrol pump. While your engine remains off the petrol stays in your tank, and a drain is generally all that it takes to put your X-Type right.
Petrol in Diesel empties wrongly fuelled vehicles where they are, and your Jaguar X-Type can be left at the forecourt or wherever it has stopped. Ring us first and let us walk you through it, instead of trying anything on your own.
The first steps for petrol in a diesel X-Type
- Motorists often drive off without noticing anything is amiss, since a diesel X-Type will usually start and run on petrol and can seem fine for the first couple of miles. So keep your engine off.
- Keep your ignition off as well. On many diesels turning it on will set the fuel pump priming, which pulls fuel from your tank on to the injectors.
- Your X-Type holds up to 61 litres, so filling the rest of the tank with diesel to thin the petrol just means more contaminated fuel to drain. The same applies to super unleaded, which counts as petrol as well.
- Forecourt attendants will usually help push the car clear in neutral if it is blocking a pump.
- If the badging gives the exact variant, for instance the X-Type 2.0 Diesel, give it once you call 0333 366 0103. Tell us too which X-Type you drive and where it is parked, roughly how much petrol was put in and whether the engine has been run.
Wrong fuel in your Jaguar X-Type once your motor has run
Wrong fuel in your Jaguar X-Type only begins to get to your engine after it is pulled from the tank, which is exactly what starting your motor does. A diesel engine relies on the fuel to lubricate the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors as it flows through them. Driving for any distance on the mix is what can do damage, since petrol dilutes your diesel and washes that lubrication away.
Pull over in a safe place and turn off if the X-Type has already been driven. All the same, we can get all the tainted fuel out, by draining the tank and then rinsing your fuel pipes and the fuel filter. When it is caught soon and cleaned out thoroughly, lasting damage is very rare.
It is the same whatever variant of the X-Type you drive, and that includes the X-Type 2.2 Diesel.
Your Jaguar X-Type fuel tank capacity, version by version
What matters is how much of the fuel inside your tank is petrol. The same few litres count for more if you fuelled up with the tank almost empty, which is why its size makes a difference.
It doesn't make a difference which version you have, because each diesel Jaguar X-Type in our figures has the same tank, holding 61 litres.
| Version | Fuel tank |
|---|---|
| Jaguar X-Type 2.0 Diesel | 61 litres |
| Jaguar X-Type 2.2 Diesel | 61 litres |
| Jaguar X-Type Estate 2.0 Diesel | 61 litres |
| Jaguar X-Type Estate 2.2 Diesel | 61 litres |
Checking your diesel X-Type version
It helps us to know the version when you phone, and it is normally on a badge at the rear of the vehicle.
Engine sizes go from 2.0 litres on the X-Type Estate 2.0 Diesel up to 2.2 litres in the X-Type Estate 2.2 Diesel.
You can also find Estate versions on the list.
AdBlue in a diesel Jaguar X-Type by accident
Water and urea go into AdBlue, which certain diesel vehicles use to treat the exhaust. It's held in a tank of its own, with its own filler. Putting AdBlue in the incorrect filler leaves you with AdBlue in a diesel Jaguar X-Type, so don't turn the key, not even to shift the car.
The fuel pump gets no lubrication at all from AdBlue, which is largely water and won't burn. It will not mix with diesel either, and sinks to the bottom of your tank, the same location your pump draws from, so a tank holding up to 61 litres won't dilute it.
Even a little gets sucked into the fuel line. Once the water has dried off, what is left is urea, which forms crystals inside the fuel system, filter and injectors included, and corrodes any metalwork it sits against.
Look under your fuel flap if your X-Type has an AdBlue filler, because on a lot of motors it is right next to the diesel filler. You can normally tell the AdBlue cap by its blue colour and the much smaller nozzle it fits.
The fuel drain on your Jaguar X-Type, in order
Every fuel drain on your Jaguar X-Type is carried out beside your car, and it doesn't need to go to a garage. We begin by checking what was put in and whether the engine has been run, then drain the tank, which on the X-Type holds up to 61 litres. Next we flush your fuel pipes and the filter and fill up with clean diesel, and the fuel system is primed before we start the engine.
Clean diesel is what your X-Type is running on by the time we have finished, and you can drive it away.
Handling AdBlue removal from a diesel Jaguar X-Type
The steps are the same as a petrol drain for AdBlue removal from a diesel Jaguar X-Type. When the X-Type has been started, AdBlue may form crystals in the lines, as it settles under your diesel rather than mixing in. We flush those out too, and replace your fuel filter if it needs it.
On this page, AdBlue removal means taking AdBlue back out of a diesel tank it was put into through the wrong filler. Disabling or taking out the AdBlue system on a vehicle isn't what it means.
Pricing a fuel drain on the Jaguar X-Type
The work varies from one job to the next, so we do not publish a set price. The main things that affect it are these:
- whether anybody has started or driven the X-Type, the thing that counts most
- how much was put in relative to the size of the tank
- whether it was petrol or AdBlue
- the location of the X-Type and how safely we can reach it with our van
With those answers over the phone, we can tell you what the job is likely to involve.
Questions on petrol in a diesel Jaguar X-Type, answered
What is the fuel tank capacity of the Jaguar X-Type?
It takes 61 litres, and our figures show the same tank on every version.
Does topping up with diesel help with a little petrol in my X-Type?
Filling up just cuts the share of petrol. None of that is taken out, so it is all still there when you drive off, which is why we wouldn't recommend it. All of that is removed with a fuel drain, which for a modest amount is normally everything the X-Type needs.
Will my X-Type have to go to the Jaguar dealer?
You do not have to. We have no tie with Jaguar or any of its dealers, being independent, and the X-Type is drained and cleaned wherever you are.
Does it help to know which X-Type I have?
Knowing your variant is useful when you phone, since there are 4 diesel variants of the X-Type in our data.
Does my insurance policy cover wrong fuel in my Jaguar X-Type?
It's worth looking at your policy, as misfuelling cover is part of some but not all. Whatever it says, we come out and empty the car.
What if I pour diesel in the AdBlue tank of my X-Type?
In that case, as well, leave the key out of the ignition. The AdBlue system will need draining, and if your vehicle is driven like that, it will most likely give a warning and enter limp mode. Tell us which tank the diesel was put in when you phone.
What should I do if I have already driven my X-Type?
Find a safe spot to pull over, then switch the motor off and keep the car that way till we arrive. Wherever you have stopped, your fuel system is drained and cleaned on the spot, and caught early like this, it very seldom leaves lasting damage.
