Petrol in a Diesel Jaguar XJ: What the Tank Holds

Anyone who has got petrol in a diesel Jaguar XJ wants to find out the capacity of its fuel tank early, because that determines how much of the fuel in there is currently petrol. We list the tank size for each version of the Jaguar XJ that our figures cover on this page, plus the motors it came with.

Regardless of what the number is, there is one piece of advice after the event. Call Petrol in Diesel with your engine switched off. We will come out to you and drain it just where it stands.

The Jaguar XJ fuel tank capacity on each version

Between 82 and 85 litres is the range for the Jaguar XJ diesel tank, and the version you have decides where yours comes.

The biggest in our figures is on the XJ6 2.7 V6 Diesel, and the smallest is fitted to the XJ 3.0 V6 Diesel.

What a couple of litres means with wrong fuel in your Jaguar XJ

How full your tank was when you refuelled sets the share of petrol, because wrong fuel in your Jaguar XJ mixes with whatever diesel is still there. In a tank which holds up to 85 litres, a few litres of unleaded added to a nearly full tank makes a small part of the total, and the same few litres going into a tank that was close to empty is a much greater share of what the engine would take in.

Drivers often wonder how much petrol is too much. The more helpful thing to know is if the engine has run, as starting it is what carries that mixture from your tank and through the pump and the fuel injectors.

A fuel drain is the safe course whatever the proportion, and with a modest volume it's generally all your XJ needs.

Diesel XJ engines and their badges

The engine in your XJ is given in the version name on the badge. Read it before you phone.

The XJ 3.0 V6 Diesel LWB carries the biggest engine at 3.0 litres, and the XJ 2.7 V6 Diesel LWB the smallest one at 2.7 litres.

When there is AdBlue in a diesel Jaguar XJ

AdBlue alters what the size of the tank means. If you have got AdBlue in a diesel Jaguar XJ, the diesel surrounding it doesn't thin it, as AdBlue is largely water and doesn't blend with diesel. It settles to the base of the tank, which is where the fuel pump draws from, so even a tiny quantity gets into your fuel lines.

AdBlue gives the pump no lubrication and will not burn. Its water dries out as it sits, leaving urea that crystallises in the fuel filter and the lines, where it attacks the metal it sits against.

The filler neck for AdBlue, on diesel vehicles that have it, commonly shares a fuel flap with the diesel one and feeds a separate tank. On any XJ with an AdBlue filler, a blue cap usually shows it, and that cap fits a smaller pump nozzle than the diesel one.

What a fuel drain on your Jaguar XJ involves

Carried out where the car is standing, a fuel drain on your Jaguar XJ clears the whole tank, whatever size it is on your version. First the contaminated fuel is pumped out, then the fuel filter and fuel lines are rinsed. After refilling with clean diesel, we re-prime your system and start the motor.

Still on the station forecourt or sitting on your drive, your XJ can be drained just the same. Clean diesel is what it runs on once the drain is finished, so you can take it away.

AdBlue removal from a diesel Jaguar XJ

AdBlue collects at the base of the tank rather than blending in, so emptying it completely is the first step in AdBlue removal from a diesel Jaguar XJ. Where the motor has been run, we flush your lines and your filter through as well and change the fuel filter if it needs it.

This is about AdBlue that has got into your diesel tank. It's not taking out or turning off the AdBlue system on the car.

How the price of a fuel drain on the Jaguar XJ is set

We do not give a fixed price, because two jobs on the same model can be very dissimilar. What affects it most is whether the XJ has been started or driven, and next how much got in relative to the capacity of the tank, whether it was petrol or AdBlue, and where the car is.

Ring with those details and we can tell you what the job will need.

Petrol in a diesel Jaguar XJ: tank queries

What's the fuel tank capacity of the Jaguar XJ?

Between 82 and 85 litres, according to the version. You can see each one in the table above.

Does a larger tank make petrol less of an issue?

Less of the total is petrol if a couple of litres go into a bigger tank, yet it's still there, and running the engine still takes it to the pump. All of it comes out with a drain, as long as your XJ is turned off.

Diesel versions of the XJ: how many do you cover?

Our figures cover 4 diesel versions of the XJ, all listed in the table above, and so you can find yours there by the name printed on its badge.

Wrong fuel in my Jaguar XJ: what does that cover?

It means anything put into your diesel tank that's not diesel, so petrol of every grade, including super unleaded, or AdBlue, which has its own separate tank.

Do you come to the Jaguar XJ to drain it?

We do. The vehicle doesn't need to be shifted or switched on, because we come to it whether it's still at the forecourt or parked on your drive.
