Petrol in a Diesel Land Rover Freelander: What the Tank Holds
If you have got petrol in a diesel Land Rover Freelander, the size of its tank is among the first points to know, as it decides how much of what is in there is currently petrol. Every version of the Land Rover Freelander we hold figures for is set out on this page with its fuel tank capacity, and so are the motors it came with.
The advice doesn't vary with the size once it has happened. Ring Petrol in Diesel with your engine kept off. We'll come out to you and empty it just where it stands.
Each version in turn: Land Rover Freelander fuel tank capacity
The diesel tank on the Land Rover Freelander holds anywhere between 59 and 68 litres, according to what version you own.
Our figures put the biggest tank on the Freelander Td4 and the smallest on the Freelander 2.0 di Station Wagon.
The Freelander Td4 Softback takes 60 litres, by comparison.
On the Freelander 2.2 eD4 the figure is 68 litres.
| Version | Fuel tank |
|---|---|
| Land Rover Freelander 2.0 di Softback | 59 litres |
| Land Rover Freelander 2.0 di Station Wagon | 59 litres |
| Land Rover Freelander 2.2 eD4 | 68 litres |
| Land Rover Freelander 2.2 SD4 | 68 litres |

A few litres of wrong fuel in your Land Rover Freelander, and what they mean
The share of petrol depends on how full your tank was before you refuelled. That is because wrong fuel in your Land Rover Freelander mixes with whatever diesel was already in there. How much petrol goes to your engine rests a lot on the amount inside the tank. It takes up to 68 litres, and on an almost full one a couple of litres remain a minor share of the whole, yet in a tank running near empty the same few litres make up a far greater share.
People often wonder how much petrol is too much. Whether the motor has run is the more helpful point to know. After it runs, your pump pulls that mixture from the tank and pushes it on to your injectors.
Whatever the share, the safe course is to have it drained, and with a small amount a drain is usually all your Freelander needs.
Which engines your diesel Freelander was sold with
The version name on the badge shows us which motor your Freelander has, and so it is worth checking before you phone.
Among the diesel Freelander versions in our figures, the badges are TD4 and SD4.
In the Freelander 2.2 SD4 the engine reaches 2.2 litres, and in the Freelander 2.0 di Softback it is 2.0 litres, the smallest of them.
Being unsure which version you own doesn't need to stop you. Phone all the same, then we'll work it out with you.
When there's AdBlue in a diesel Land Rover Freelander
Where AdBlue is concerned, the tank size counts differently. The fuel pump draws its fuel from the bottom of the tank, and that's where AdBlue settles, so even a small volume gets into your fuel line. If you have AdBlue in a diesel Land Rover Freelander, the diesel surrounding it does not weaken it, because AdBlue is largely water and doesn't mix with diesel.
AdBlue doesn't burn and gives the pump no lubrication, and as its water dries out, the urea left over forms crystals in the lines and the fuel filter and attacks the metal around it.
A separate tank with a dedicated filler holds the AdBlue on certain diesel vehicles, frequently next to the diesel filler under the same flap. Where your Freelander has an AdBlue filler, its cap is normally blue and accepts a smaller pump nozzle than the diesel one.
A fuel drain on your Land Rover Freelander, step by step
Whatever size your tank is on your version, a fuel drain on your Land Rover Freelander clears all of it, just where the vehicle is parked. We pump the tainted fuel out, flush the lines and your filter, and fill up again with clean diesel ahead of re-priming your system and firing up the engine.
Still at the station forecourt or sitting on your driveway, your Freelander can be emptied just the same. Fresh diesel is what it runs on after this drain is done, and so you can take it away.
AdBlue removal from a diesel Land Rover Freelander, explained
AdBlue gathers at the bottom of the tank instead of blending in, and so emptying it entirely is the opening stage of AdBlue removal from a diesel Land Rover Freelander. Where your engine has been run, we rinse the lines and the fuel filter through as well and replace the filter if it needs it.
What this covers is AdBlue that ended up in the diesel tank, not removing or switching off the AdBlue system on your car.
What a fuel drain on the Land Rover Freelander will cost
The same model can mean very different jobs, which is why we do not publish a fixed price. What changes it most is whether the Freelander has been started or driven, and beyond that how much was put in against the size of your tank, whether it was petrol or AdBlue, and where your car is now.
We can tell you what is involved in the job when you ring with those facts.
Questions on the tank and petrol in a diesel Land Rover Freelander
Fuel tank capacity of the Land Rover Freelander: how much does it hold?
It depends on the version, from 59 to 68 litres, and the table above has every one.
Does petrol matter less in a bigger tank?
The petrol is still there in a bigger tank, and still reaches the pump when the engine runs, even though a few litres form less of the total. All of that comes out with a drain, as long as your Freelander is switched off.
How many versions of the diesel Freelander are in your figures?
There are 8 diesel Freelander versions in our figures, and the model name on the badge shows which row of the table above is yours.
Which fuels, other than diesel, would be wrong fuel in my Land Rover Freelander?
Only diesel belongs in your diesel tank. Petrol of every type, super unleaded too, is wrong fuel, and so is AdBlue, which belongs in a tank of its own.
Will you drain the Land Rover Freelander where it is?
There is no need to shift or start the vehicle. Whether it's parked at home or still on the forecourt, we come to it.
