Petrol in Diesel

Have You Put Petrol in a Diesel Mazda 626?

The engine is best left off if it has not been run since you put petrol in a diesel Mazda 626, and that includes moving it clear of the petrol pump. While the motor stays off the petrol stays in the tank, so a fuel drain is generally all it needs to set the 626 right.

We come to wrongly fuelled vehicles instead of the other way round, so with Petrol in Diesel your Mazda 626 stays on the forecourt or wherever it ended up. Ring us before anything else and let us take you through it, rather than attempting anything on your own.

Petrol in a diesel 626: what to do right away

  • Leave the engine off. A diesel 626 will normally fire up and run with petrol inside the tank, and it may seem normal for a few miles, which explains why motorists commonly drive away without noticing something is wrong.
  • Fuel can be drawn to the fuel injectors even before the motor has fired, since on a lot of diesel motors your ignition alone starts priming the fuel pump. Keep your ignition off as well.
  • Don't fill the rest of your tank with diesel to dilute it. The 626 holds up to 64 litres, and filling it up only means more tainted fuel to empty out. Super unleaded is petrol here as well.
  • A vehicle blocking a pump can be put in neutral and rolled clear, and the forecourt staff are generally glad to lend a hand.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103 and let us know which 626 you have and where it is, approximately how much petrol went in, and whether your engine has run. If the precise variant is on the badging, for example the 626 Turbodiesel, tell us that too.

Wrong fuel in your Mazda 626 once the motor has run

Wrong fuel in your Mazda 626 only begins to get to the motor after it is pulled from your tank, which is what starting your engine does. A diesel engine relies on the fuel to lubricate the high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors as it flows through them. With petrol thinning your diesel, that protection is lost, and driving any distance on it is then what can cause harm.

If you've driven the 626 on it, the thing to do is pull over somewhere safe and switch the motor off. All the same, we can take all the contaminated fuel out, by draining your tank and then flushing the fuel lines and the fuel filter. Very few cars that are caught soon and flushed out thoroughly end up with permanent harm.

The 626 D is no different here from any other version of the 626.

Fuel drain on a diesel Mazda 626

Mazda 626 fuel tank capacity

If you fuelled up while the tank was close to empty, the same couple of litres make up more of your fuel in it, and the risk rests on that proportion, so the capacity of your tank counts.

From 60 litres up to 64, the fuel tank on the Mazda 626 changes with the variant.

Our figures place the largest tank in the 626 Estate D and the smallest in the 626 2.0 D.

The 626 TD-DI takes 64 litres.

Telling which diesel 626 you drive

The variant is generally on the badging on the boot lid, and it helps us to know it when you phone.

On a diesel 626 you will find TD on the badging.

There is a single motor size across our list, 2.0 litres.

There are Estate versions on the list as well.

AdBlue in a diesel Mazda 626

Certain diesel cars carry a mix of water and urea, known as AdBlue, in a tank of its own with a separate filler, and rely on it to clean up their exhaust. Even to shift your car, do not touch your key if you've got AdBlue in a diesel Mazda 626 after it went into the incorrect filler.

Because it's largely water, AdBlue does not burn and offers the fuel pump no protection whatsoever. It does not blend with diesel either, so it settles to the bottom of the tank where your pump takes its fuel, and a tank holding up to 64 litres does nothing to dilute it as it would dilute petrol.

No matter how small the volume, some of it is sucked into the line. Crystals of urea form in your filter, the injectors and the remainder of the fuel system as the water dries off, and they corrode the metalwork they touch.

The same flap frequently covers both fillers, and where your 626 has an AdBlue filler, it could well be beside the diesel one. AdBlue caps are generally blue and fit a much smaller nozzle than diesel.

How a fuel drain on your Mazda 626 works

We carry out a fuel drain on your Mazda 626 where your vehicle sits, and it never needs to be taken to a garage. We begin by checking what was put in and whether the engine has run, then drain your tank, which on the 626 holds up to 64 litres. After that we clean your fuel pipes and your filter and fill up with clean diesel, and your system is primed before we start it.

In the 626 Estate Turbodiesel the tank holds 64 litres.

You can take the 626 away when we have finished, running on clean diesel.

Handling AdBlue removal from a diesel Mazda 626

We take the same steps for AdBlue removal from a diesel Mazda 626 as we do for clearing petrol. When the 626 has been started, AdBlue can form crystals in the lines, since it collects under the diesel rather than mixing in. We rinse those out too, and replace the fuel filter where needed.

AdBlue removal on this page means taking AdBlue out of your diesel tank after it has gone in the incorrect filler. It doesn't mean taking out or switching off the AdBlue system on your car.

A fuel drain on the Mazda 626: the cost

A fixed price is not something we publish, since no two jobs involve the same work. It mainly comes down to the following:

  • whether anybody has started or driven the 626, the thing that counts most
  • the amount put in, measured against the size of the tank
  • whether it was AdBlue instead of petrol
  • whether the van can easily and safely reach the 626 where it sits

To give a comparison, the fuel tank on the 626 Estate TD-DI takes 64 litres when full.

Ring with those answers and we'll be able to say what's likely to be involved.

Petrol in a diesel Mazda 626: questions

The Mazda 626 fuel tank capacity: how many litres?

The table further up shows every variant, with tanks between 60 and 64 litres.

Does topping up with diesel help with a little petrol in my 626?

We would not advise it. Adding diesel cuts the proportion of petrol without removing any of it, so the petrol is still in the system when you drive off. A drain takes all of it out, and with a small quantity that is usually all your 626 needs.

Do I need to take my 626 to the Mazda dealer?

You don't need to. We have no connection with Mazda or any of its dealers, being independent, and your 626 is emptied and cleaned wherever you are.

Does it matter which 626 I drive?

We hold figures for 7 diesel variants of the 626, and knowing which one you have helps us when you phone.

Does my insurance policy cover wrong fuel in my Mazda 626?

It is worth checking your policy, as misfuelling cover is part of some but not all. Whatever it says, we come out to drain the vehicle.

Diesel in the AdBlue tank of my 626: what now?

Here, too, the right thing is to leave your ignition alone. The AdBlue system will need draining, and if the vehicle is driven like that, it'll most likely display an alert and go into limp mode. Do say which tank took your fuel when you call.

Already driven my 626: what do I do?

Pull over where it's safe and turn the engine off, then leave it off till we get to you. Catching it this early means permanent harm is very uncommon, and we empty and clean the fuel system wherever you are.
