What a few litres means for wrong fuel in your Mercedes E-Class

How full the tank was when you filled up sets the proportion of petrol, as wrong fuel in your Mercedes E-Class mixes with whatever diesel was already there. When a few litres of unleaded are put into a tank running close to empty, they make up a much larger share of what your engine would draw. Added to an almost full tank of up to 80 litres, the same amount is only a small share of the total.

People often want to know how much petrol counts as too much. Starting the engine is what carries the blend out of your tank and through the pump and your injectors, and so the more useful point to know is whether it has run.

With a small amount, a fuel drain is generally all your E-Class needs, and whatever the proportion, getting it drained is the safe thing to do.

Engines used in your diesel E-Class

The engine in your E-Class is given in the version name on the badge. Check it before you phone.

Diesel versions of the E-Class within our figures have CDI and BlueTEC badging.

The E 300 Bluetec Hybrid has the BlueTEC badge, whereas the badge seen across more versions than any other is CDI.

There are Coupe E-Class versions in the figures too.

Not knowing which version you have does not matter. Call all the same, then we will work it out with you.

What happens with AdBlue in a diesel Mercedes E-Class

Tank size works differently with AdBlue. AdBlue is mainly water and does not blend with diesel, so with AdBlue in a diesel Mercedes E-Class, your diesel around it does nothing to thin it. Because it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel pump pulls from, even a small amount reaches the fuel lines.

AdBlue doesn't burn and gives your pump no protection, and as its water dries out, the urea left behind forms crystals in the fuel lines and the filter and attacks the metal next to it.

Certain diesel cars keep AdBlue in a second tank with a dedicated filler, often next to the diesel one under the same flap. Where your E-Class has an AdBlue filler, its cap is generally blue and fits a narrower pump nozzle than the diesel one.

Fuel drain on your Mercedes E-Class

Whatever size your tank is on your version, a fuel drain on your Mercedes E-Class empties all of it, right where the vehicle is parked. First the contaminated fuel is pumped out, then the fuel filter and fuel lines are flushed. After filling up with clean diesel, we prime your system and fire up your engine.

Still on the forecourt or sitting on your driveway, your E-Class can be drained just the same. When we finish the drain, the vehicle is running on fresh diesel and ready to drive away.

How AdBlue removal from a diesel Mercedes E-Class works

AdBlue removal from a diesel Mercedes E-Class begins with clearing the tank fully, since AdBlue collects at the base instead of mixing in. Where your engine has run, we rinse your lines and the fuel filter through as well and change the filter if it needs it.

Taking out or disabling the AdBlue system on the vehicle isn't what this is about. It's about AdBlue that has got into the diesel tank.

The cost of a fuel drain on the Mercedes E-Class

Two jobs on the same model can be quite dissimilar, and so we do not publish a fixed price. The biggest factor is whether anyone has run or driven the E-Class. Then comes the quantity that went in against how big the tank is, which fuel it was, and where the car is now.

We can let you know what is involved in this job when you call with those details.

Petrol in a diesel Mercedes E-Class: tank queries

What does the Mercedes E-Class fuel tank capacity amount to?

Every version is set out above in the table, with tanks from 50 to 80 litres depending on which one you have.

Does petrol matter less with a bigger tank?

A bigger tank means a few litres form less of the whole, yet the petrol is still there and still reaches the pump as soon as your engine runs. All of it is cleared with a fuel drain, as long as your E-Class is turned off.

How many diesel versions of the E-Class do you cover?

We keep data for 59 diesel versions of the E-Class, so you can spot yours in the table above by the name on its badge.

Which fuels, other than diesel, would be wrong fuel in my Mercedes E-Class?

It means everything put into the diesel tank that is not diesel, so petrol of any grade, including super unleaded, or AdBlue, which has its own dedicated tank.

Do you come to the Mercedes E-Class to drain it?

There's no need to move or start your car. Whether it is parked on your drive or still on the forecourt, we travel to it.
