Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Mitsubishi Space Gear?

We'd urge you to leave the engine off when you have put petrol in a diesel Mitsubishi Space Gear and not run it yet, and that goes for moving it off the forecourt too. With the motor kept off, the petrol remains where it is in your tank, and in the majority of cases a fuel drain is all the Space Gear needs.

There is no need to shift your Mitsubishi Space Gear off the forecourt, or from any other place where it came to a stop, because the drain is carried out by Petrol in Diesel wherever your car stands. Wait before attempting anything on your own until you have phoned us, and we'll explain what to do.

Petrol in a diesel Space Gear: what to do first

  • Leave your engine off. A diesel Space Gear will usually start and run with petrol in the tank, and it can feel fine for a few miles, which explains why drivers commonly drive off without realising something is amiss.
  • Turning your ignition on is all it takes, on a lot of diesels, to set the fuel pump priming and pull fuel from your tank to the injectors, so leave that off too.
  • Your Space Gear holds up to 75 litres, so filling the rest of the tank with diesel to dilute the petrol only means more contaminated fuel to empty out. The same goes for super unleaded, which counts as petrol too.
  • Ask the forecourt attendants when the vehicle is in the way of a pump. They generally help push the car out of the way after it is in neutral.
  • If the badging gives the exact version, for example the Space Gear TD 4WD 2500 GLX, give it when you call 0333 366 0103. Tell us as well which Space Gear you drive and where it is, roughly how much petrol was put in and whether your engine has run.

Wrong fuel in your Mitsubishi Space Gear after your engine has been run

The engine is not touched by wrong fuel in your Mitsubishi Space Gear until it is drawn from your tank, and starting your motor is what pulls it out. A diesel motor relies on the fuel to lubricate your high-pressure pump and the injectors whilst it passes through them. Driving for any distance on that mix is what can do damage, because petrol dilutes your diesel and strips that lubrication away.

Look for a safe place to pull in then switch off, if the Space Gear has already been driven. It can still be dealt with, with the tank emptied and the pipes and fuel filter rinsed until the last of the contaminated fuel has been removed. Provided it is cleaned out thoroughly after being caught soon, it very rarely leaves permanent harm.

Fuel drain on a diesel Mitsubishi Space Gear

The fuel tank capacity of the Mitsubishi Space Gear

The capacity of your tank counts because the risk depends on what proportion of the fuel in it is petrol, so the same couple of litres are more of a worry if your tank was almost empty when you fuelled up.

The variant sets your tank size on the Mitsubishi Space Gear, which runs from 66 to 75 litres.

Our figures place the largest tank in the Space Gear TD 4WD 2500 GLX and the smallest in the Space Gear TD 2500 GLX.

Working out which diesel Space Gear you drive

The version is usually on the badging on your boot lid, and it's useful for us to know when you phone.

Diesel versions of the Space Gear were labelled TD.

Put AdBlue in a diesel Mitsubishi Space Gear?

Some diesel cars hold a mix of water and urea, called AdBlue, in a tank of its own with a dedicated filler, and rely on it to treat their exhaust. If you have AdBlue in a diesel Mitsubishi Space Gear because it went into the wrong filler, do not turn your key, even to shift the car.

The fuel pump gets no protection at all from AdBlue, which is largely water and will not ignite. It won't mix with diesel either, and sinks to the bottom of the tank, the very spot your pump draws from, so a tank holding up to 75 litres won't dilute it.

Even a small amount is pulled into your fuel line. Inside your fuel system the water dries off and leaves the urea to crystallise, in the fuel filter and injectors among other places, where it corrodes the metal it touches.

Look under your fuel flap where your Space Gear has an AdBlue filler, since on many vehicles it is right beside your diesel filler. AdBlue caps are generally blue and accept a much smaller nozzle than diesel.

Fuel drain on your Mitsubishi Space Gear: what we do

There's no garage needed, because we do a fuel drain on your Mitsubishi Space Gear at the vehicle itself. We begin by confirming what went in and whether the motor has been run, then drain your tank, which on the Space Gear holds up to 75 litres. After that we clean the fuel lines and your filter and fill up with clean diesel, and the system is primed before we fire it up.

When the job is done, the Space Gear is running on fresh diesel and you can drive off in it.

What AdBlue removal from a diesel Mitsubishi Space Gear involves

AdBlue removal from a diesel Mitsubishi Space Gear follows the same stages as a petrol drain. We flush deposits out of the pipes as well when the Space Gear has been run, and swap the fuel filter if needed, as AdBlue settles in the base of the tank rather than mixing in and may leave them there.

On this page, AdBlue removal means taking AdBlue back out of a diesel tank it was put into through the incorrect filler. Disabling or taking out the AdBlue system on a vehicle isn't what it means.

Pricing a fuel drain on the Mitsubishi Space Gear

We don't publish a fixed price, as this work changes from one job to the next. These are the main factors that shape it:

  • most of all, whether the Space Gear has been driven or even started
  • how much went in relative to the capacity of your tank
  • which of the two it was, petrol or AdBlue
  • where the Space Gear is, and whether we can get our van to it safely

We can tell you what the work will probably involve once you ring with those details.

Queries about petrol in a diesel Mitsubishi Space Gear

What is the fuel tank capacity of the Mitsubishi Space Gear?

Between 66 and 75 litres depending on the version, and the table above gives each one.

I only put a little petrol in my Space Gear. Should I top up with diesel?

We would not recommend it. Adding diesel cuts the proportion of petrol without removing any of it, so the petrol is still in the fuel system when you drive. The Space Gear generally requires no more than a drain if only a small amount went in, and that gets that petrol out entirely.

Is a trip to the Mitsubishi dealer necessary for my Space Gear?

You do not need to. We have no connection with Mitsubishi or any of its dealers, being independent, and your Space Gear is emptied and cleaned where you have stopped.

Which Space Gear I have: does it make a difference?

Yes, it does. Our data cover 2 diesel versions of the Space Gear, so tell us which one you have when you phone.

Does my insurance cover wrong fuel in my Mitsubishi Space Gear?

It is worth looking at your insurance, as misfuelling cover is part of some but not all. Whatever it says, we come out and drain your vehicle.

Diesel in the AdBlue tank of my Space Gear: what happens?

Keep the key out of the ignition in that case as well. The AdBlue system will need draining, and when the car is driven that way, it will most likely show a warning and enter limp mode. Tell us which tank the diesel went into when you call.

Already driven my Space Gear: what do I do?

Pull over where it's safe and switch the motor off, then keep it off until we arrive. We empty and clean the fuel system wherever you have stopped, and when it is caught early like this, lasting harm is very rare.
