Petrol in Diesel

Kept Driving With Petrol in a Diesel Porsche Cayenne?

The motor wants turning off then keeping off once you can pull over safely, if you've travelled with petrol in a diesel Porsche Cayenne. It's very rare for permanent damage to follow when it is caught soon, while it can still be dealt with where you've stopped.

Petrol in Diesel comes to wherever your Porsche Cayenne has ended up, drains your fuel tank and clears the petrol from the system. When we go, it's running again on clean diesel.

How petrol in a diesel Cayenne shows itself

It's often a couple of miles before the symptoms show up, as with petrol inside the tank a diesel Cayenne tends to run normally to begin with. With petrol or AdBlue inside the tank, these are the ones motorists tend to notice:

  • power drops away, especially when you ask the engine to accelerate
  • it ticks over erratically, or it runs rough
  • there is more smoke than normal from the tailpipe
  • warning lights on the dash light up
  • it stalls and might not restart

One of these beginning after you filled up is reason enough to check your receipt and see what was put in.

How far wrong fuel in your Porsche Cayenne goes once you drive

Driving is what pulls wrong fuel in your Porsche Cayenne from the fuel tank then on through the filter, the high-pressure pump and your fuel injectors. Until the engine pulls it out, it stays where it is. As diesel passes through your injectors and the pump it protects them, but petrol weakens it, and that is why the Cayenne takes that mixture further into your system the more it's driven.

That's why it is better to stop the moment you can than to finish the trip. A vehicle that's stopped soon normally needs nothing more than a drain and a clean. What can cause harm is covering a long way on tainted fuel.

We come to where you've pulled up

There's no need to take the Cayenne anywhere. No recovery truck has to be arranged and there is no need to start it, as we come to it at the side of the road or outside your home.

Somewhere safe, clear of the traffic, is the place to wait if you are next to a main road, with your hazard lights on.

Before you call 0333 366 0103, have your whereabouts ready, along with the distance you drove and which Cayenne it is. The version on the badge, such as the Cayenne Diesel, is useful as well.

Fuel drain on your Porsche Cayenne after it has been driven

Once it was driven, a fuel drain on your Porsche Cayenne involves one step more than one on the forecourt. No petrol is remaining between the tank and the motor by the end, so the fuel tank is emptied first and the lines are then opened and flushed through with the fuel filter. With fresh diesel in and the system primed, we start the motor then make sure it runs correctly.

When the engine has run with AdBlue in a diesel Porsche Cayenne

If you have AdBlue in a diesel Porsche Cayenne and have driven on it, the symptoms are normally rough running, smoke and warning lamps, and the vehicle might cut out. AdBlue does not burn or lubricate, and it sinks to the base of your fuel tank where the pump draws fuel, and so it gets to your fuel line quickly. As its water dries out, the urea forms crystals in your lines and the filter.

AdBlue removal from a diesel Porsche Cayenne after driving

Draining your tank comes first in AdBlue removal from a diesel Porsche Cayenne that has been run, and then the crystals are flushed out of your fuel lines and your fuel filter, with the filter changed if it needs it.

If your Cayenne has a separate AdBlue tank, that's left as it is. This is about fluid in the diesel tank, not taking out or turning off the AdBlue system.

The Porsche Cayenne fuel tank capacity and the engines

Of the Porsche Cayenne versions, the Cayenne Diesel has the largest diesel tank, at 100 litres, and the Cayenne S Diesel the smallest, at 85 litres.

Costing a fuel drain on the Porsche Cayenne after driving

How far it travelled and where it has stopped are what mostly settle the price of a fuel drain on the Porsche Cayenne after a drive, and petrol or AdBlue makes a difference too. We can explain what the work will need when you ring with those details.

Questions after driving with petrol in a diesel Porsche Cayenne

Has the petrol ruined my Cayenne?

It is very unlikely. Permanent harm is rare when the car is stopped early and the system is emptied and flushed, and that is what we do wherever you have stopped.

Should I drive it home first?

Our guidance would be not to. Contaminated fuel gets further into the system with each mile, so leave the Cayenne where it is whilst we empty it there, with no reason to move the vehicle.

It has stalled and won't restart. What should I do?

Leaving it alone is better than trying again, since each attempt draws that blend further through. Once we have emptied and rinsed it and then put clean diesel in, we prime the system and start the vehicle for you.

Does it matter which Cayenne I have?

Knowing which of the 2 diesel versions of the Cayenne you have assists us when you call, and it is on the badge on the tailgate.

Insurance and wrong fuel in my Porsche Cayenne: am I covered?

Misfuelling cover is included in some policies, so look at yours once your car has been dealt with. Either way, we still come out.
