Have You Put Petrol in a Diesel Renault Kadjar?
We'd ask you to keep the motor off when you have put petrol in a diesel Renault Kadjar and not started it yet, and that counts for moving it off the forecourt as well. That petrol cannot leave your tank while your engine is off, so the Kadjar can normally be set right with a drain.
We come to wrongly fuelled cars instead of the other way round, so with Petrol in Diesel your Renault Kadjar stays at the forecourt or wherever it has stopped. Wait before trying anything yourself till you've phoned us, and we will explain what to do.
Petrol in a diesel Kadjar: what to do right away
- With petrol inside your tank, a diesel Kadjar will generally still fire up and run, and seem perfectly normal for several miles. That's why motorists frequently drive off without spotting a problem, and why the motor should be left off.
- Turning your ignition on is all it takes, on plenty of diesels, to start the fuel pump priming and pull fuel from the tank to your injectors, so keep that off as well.
- Don't fill the remainder of your tank with diesel to thin it. The Kadjar takes up to 55 litres, and topping it up only leaves more contaminated fuel to drain. Super unleaded is petrol here as well.
- When your car is in the way of a pump, pop it in neutral then roll the car out of the way. Forecourt attendants are usually willing to help with that.
- Ring 0333 366 0103 then let us know which Kadjar you have and where it is parked, approximately how much petrol went in, and whether your engine has run. Where the precise version is on the badging, for instance the Kadjar ENERGY dCi 110, tell us that as well.
Driving on wrong fuel in your Renault Kadjar
The engine is not touched by wrong fuel in your Renault Kadjar till it is pulled from the tank, and starting the engine is what pulls it out. As it passes through, diesel fuel keeps the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors lubricated, and the motor relies on that. With petrol diluting your diesel, that lubrication is lost, and driving for any distance on it is then what can do harm.
If you've driven your Kadjar on it, the right thing to do is pull over in a safe place and switch the motor off. All the same, we can get all the tainted fuel out, by draining your tank and then cleaning your fuel lines and the fuel filter. As long as it is cleaned out thoroughly after being caught early, it very seldom leaves long-term harm.
That applies to the Kadjar ENERGY dCi 130 as much as every other version of the Kadjar.
The Renault Kadjar fuel tank capacity, version by version
What matters is how much of the fuel in your tank is petrol. The same few litres count for more if you filled up with your tank close to empty, which is why its size makes a difference.
It does not make a difference which variant you drive, as each diesel Renault Kadjar in our figures has the same tank, taking 55 litres.
| Version | Fuel tank |
|---|---|
| Renault Kadjar ENERGY dCi 110 | 55 litres |
| Renault Kadjar ENERGY dCi 130 | 55 litres |
Working out which diesel Kadjar you have
It helps us to know the variant when you ring, and it is normally on a badge at the rear of the car.
Diesel versions of the Kadjar were badged dCi.
AdBlue in a diesel Renault Kadjar by mistake
AdBlue is a mix of water and urea that some diesel vehicles use to clean up their exhaust, and it has a separate tank and filler. Putting AdBlue in the incorrect filler gives you AdBlue in a diesel Renault Kadjar, so don't turn your key, not even to move it.
The fuel pump has no lubrication at all from AdBlue, which is largely water and won't ignite. It won't mix with diesel either, and drops to the bottom of your tank, the very place your pump pulls from, so a tank of up to 55 litres does nothing to dilute it.
Even a small amount is pulled into the fuel line. As the water evaporates, the urea crystallises inside the fuel system, including the fuel filter and injectors, and it attacks the metal it touches.
On many cars the AdBlue filler sits alongside the diesel filler under the same flap, and if the Kadjar has one, it could well be there too. A blue lid and a nozzle much smaller than diesel typically pick out the AdBlue filler.
How a fuel drain on your Renault Kadjar works
We do a fuel drain on your Renault Kadjar where your vehicle stands, and it never needs to go to a garage. To begin with we find out what was put in and whether your engine has run. The tank, which takes up to 55 litres on the Kadjar, is then drained, the pipes and fuel filter are flushed, and the vehicle is refilled with clean diesel and primed before we start your engine.
You are free to take your Kadjar away once the job is done, now running on clean diesel.
AdBlue removal from a diesel Renault Kadjar, step by step
Like draining petrol, AdBlue removal from a diesel Renault Kadjar runs through the same stages. When the Kadjar has been run, AdBlue may form crystals in the lines, as it settles under the diesel instead of blending in. We rinse those through as well, and replace the fuel filter where needed.
AdBlue removal, as we use it here, covers AdBlue that was put in the incorrect filler and has to come out of the diesel tank. It does not cover removing or disabling the AdBlue system on the car.
The cost of a fuel drain on the Renault Kadjar
The work changes from one task to the next, so we don't publish a fixed quote. The chief things that shape it are these:
- starting or driving the Kadjar, which makes more difference than anything else
- how much was put in compared with the size of the tank
- what went in, petrol or AdBlue
- the position of the Kadjar and how safely we can reach it with the van
Ring with those answers and we will be able to say what's likely to be involved.
Queries on petrol in a diesel Renault Kadjar, with answers
How many litres is the Renault Kadjar fuel tank capacity?
55 litres. Your tank is the same size whatever version you have.
Can I top up with diesel if I just put a little petrol in my Kadjar?
We would not advise it. Adding diesel cuts the proportion of petrol without removing any of it, so that petrol is still in your system when you drive off. A fuel drain takes all of it out, and with a modest amount that's generally all the Kadjar needs.
Do I have to take my Kadjar to the Renault dealer?
You do not have to. We have no connection with Renault or any of its dealers, being independent, and your Kadjar is drained and cleaned wherever you are.
Do you need to know which Kadjar I have?
Yes, it does. Our data cover 2 diesel versions of the Kadjar, so tell us which one you have when you ring.
Is wrong fuel in my Renault Kadjar covered by my insurance?
It is worth checking your insurance, as misfuelling cover is included in some and not others. Whatever it says, we come out and empty your car.
What should I do if my Kadjar got diesel in its AdBlue tank?
In this case, too, the sensible thing is to leave your ignition alone. If it's driven like that, a vehicle will usually give a warning and enter limp mode. The AdBlue system needs emptying as well. When you call, let us know which tank the fuel went into.
I drove my Kadjar before I noticed. What should I do?
Till we reach you, your engine should stay off, so stop where it is safe and switch it off. Catching it this soon means long-term harm is very rare, plus we empty and clean your fuel system wherever you are.
