Petrol in Diesel

Kept Driving With Petrol in a Diesel Toyota Verso?

If you have travelled with petrol in a diesel Toyota Verso, pull over as soon as it's safe, switch the engine off and leave it off. Spotted early, it only very rarely causes lasting harm, while sorting it out where you've stopped is still possible.

Petrol in Diesel travels out to wherever your Toyota Verso has stopped, empties your tank then flushes the petrol from your fuel system. It's on fresh diesel and running when we go.

Noticing petrol in a diesel Verso

You might go a few miles without spotting anything, as petrol inside your fuel tank often keeps a diesel Verso driving as usual to begin with. With petrol or AdBlue inside your fuel tank, these are the signs people normally spot:

  • the engine is short of power, particularly whenever it has to pull
  • rough running, or an erratic idle
  • there's more smoke than normal from the exhaust
  • dashboard warning lights show
  • the motor cuts out and may not start again

One of these beginning after you fuelled up is reason enough to check your receipt to see what was put in.

What driving does to wrong fuel in your Toyota Verso

The fuel tank holds wrong fuel in your Toyota Verso in one place till it's pulled out by the engine. After the car is driven, it is drawn through the fuel injectors, the filter and the high-pressure fuel pump. Petrol dilutes the diesel that protects the pump and the injectors as it flows through them, so running the Verso further brings that mixture into more of your system.

That's why it's better to stop as soon as you can than to finish the trip. Travelling a long way on contaminated fuel is what can cause harm, and if a motor is stopped early, draining and cleaning are usually all it needs.

Waiting where you have stopped

There's no reason to take the Verso anywhere. No tow has to be organised and there's no need to start it, because we come to it at the roadside or outside your home.

A safe place, clear of the traffic, is where to wait when you are next to a main road, with your hazard lights on.

Before you call 0333 366 0103, have your whereabouts ready, along with the mileage you drove and which Verso it is. If the badge shows the version, like the Verso 2.0 D-4D 125, it helps as well.

Once it has been driven: fuel drain on your Toyota Verso

Next to a drain on the forecourt, a fuel drain on your Toyota Verso goes a step further after a drive. We empty your fuel tank first, then open up your fuel lines and then flush them through with the filter, so that no petrol is remaining between the fuel tank and the motor. The fuel system is primed once fresh diesel has gone in, then the engine is started to make sure it runs properly.

If the engine has been run with AdBlue in a diesel Toyota Verso

Driving with AdBlue in a diesel Toyota Verso normally brings warning lamps, smoke and uneven running, and the vehicle may stall. As AdBlue settles to the base of your tank, where the fuel pump takes its fuel, it's in your fuel line quickly, and it does not burn or lubricate. The urea crystallises in your fuel filter and your lines as its water dries.

How AdBlue removal from a diesel Toyota Verso is done

Draining your fuel tank comes first in AdBlue removal from a diesel Toyota Verso that has been run, and then the crystals are flushed out of your fuel lines and the filter, with the filter changed if it needs it.

If your Verso has a separate AdBlue tank, that is left as it is. This is about fluid in your diesel tank, not taking out or turning off the AdBlue system.

Toyota Verso fuel tank capacity and engines

The Toyota Verso has the same diesel fuel tank, 60 litres, on every version in our figures.

The badges on diesel Verso versions read D-4D.

The Verso 2.2 D-4D 180 has the largest engine at 2.2 litres, and the Verso 2.0 D-4D 150 has the smallest, at 2.0 litres.

The price of a fuel drain on the Toyota Verso after a drive

The cost of a fuel drain on the Toyota Verso after it has been driven depends largely on how far it went and where it has ended up, and whether it was petrol or AdBlue makes a difference too. Call with those details and we can tell you what the job will need.

Common questions after driving with petrol in a diesel Toyota Verso

Is my Verso ruined?

It is very unlikely. Lasting harm is rare when the car is stopped early and your fuel system is emptied and cleaned, and that's what we do where you have stopped.

Can I drive the car home first?

It is wiser not to. Contaminated fuel reaches further into your fuel system with each mile, so keep the Verso where it stands while we empty it there, with no reason to shift it.

It will not restart after stalling. What now?

Please don't try a second time. Leave it as it is, since each attempt draws more of the blend through. After we have drained and flushed it and put clean diesel in, we prime your system and get it started for you.

Which Verso I own: does it matter?

The badge on the tailgate gives the version you have, out of the 3 diesel versions of the Verso, and knowing it helps us when you ring.

Wrong fuel in my Toyota Verso: does insurance cover it?

Some insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth looking at yours after the vehicle is sorted out. We still come out either way.
