Petrol in a Diesel Volkswagen Jetta: What the Tank Holds
Anyone who has got petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Jetta needs to know the size of its fuel tank first, as that decides how much of what is in there is currently petrol. The tank size and the engines are set out here for each Volkswagen Jetta version which we hold data for.
After it has happened, the same guidance applies whatever the size is. Keep the engine off then phone Petrol in Diesel, after which we will come out and empty the car where it stands.
How every version stacks up on Volkswagen Jetta fuel tank capacity
55 litres is what the fuel tank takes on every version of the Volkswagen Jetta we have figures for, because they all share the same fuel tank.
| Version | Fuel tank |
|---|---|
| Volkswagen Jetta 1.6 TDI | 55 litres |
| Volkswagen Jetta 1.9 TDI | 55 litres |
| Volkswagen Jetta 2.0 TDI | 55 litres |
| Volkswagen Jetta 2.0 TDI GT | 55 litres |
What a few litres means with wrong fuel in your Volkswagen Jetta
The proportion of petrol hinges on how full your tank was before you refuelled. That is because wrong fuel in your Volkswagen Jetta blends with whatever diesel is already in there. Up to 55 litres go in the tank. Filling a nearly full one with a few litres of unleaded leaves only a small share of petrol in the total, while the same quantity in a nearly empty tank makes up much more of what the motor would take in.
Drivers often ask how much petrol is too much. Starting the motor is what moves the blend out of your tank and through your pump and the fuel injectors, and so the more useful point to find out is if it has run.
Having it emptied is the right option whatever the proportion is. When the quantity is modest, your Jetta usually needs nothing more than that.
Engines found in your diesel Jetta
The version name on the badge tells us which engine your Jetta has, and so it's worth noting before you phone.
The badges on all diesel versions of the Jetta within our figures are TDI.
At the lower end of the range is the Jetta 1.6 TDI with 1.6 litres, and at the top is the Jetta 2.0 TDI GT with 2.0 litres.
Being unsure which version you own doesn't matter. Call anyway, then we'll work it out with you.
Tank size and AdBlue in a diesel Volkswagen Jetta
Tank size plays out differently with AdBlue. If you have AdBlue in a diesel Volkswagen Jetta, the diesel surrounding it doesn't thin it, since AdBlue is mostly water and doesn't mix with diesel. It sinks to the base of your tank, which is where the fuel pump draws from, so even a tiny amount reaches the fuel line.
As the water in AdBlue evaporates, the urea left behind crystallises in your lines and the filter and attacks the metal around it, and AdBlue doesn't combust or give the pump any protection either.
The filler for AdBlue, on diesel cars that carry it, often shares a flap with the diesel one and leads to a separate tank. Where your Jetta has an AdBlue filler, its filler cap is generally blue and accepts a slimmer nozzle than the diesel filler.
Fuel drain on your Volkswagen Jetta
A fuel drain on your Volkswagen Jetta empties the whole tank, whatever its size in your version, and it's done where your car is parked. We draw the tainted fuel out, flush the lines and the fuel filter, and refill with clean diesel ahead of re-priming the system and firing up the engine.
It makes no difference whether your Jetta is still at the station forecourt or left on your driveway. Once the drain is done it is running on clean diesel and you can take it away.
What AdBlue removal from a diesel Volkswagen Jetta takes
AdBlue gathers at the bottom of your tank rather than blending in, and so draining it fully is the opening stage in AdBlue removal from a diesel Volkswagen Jetta. Where the motor has run, we rinse your lines and your filter through as well and change the filter if it needs it.
This covers AdBlue that has got into your diesel tank. It is not taking out or disabling the AdBlue system on the vehicle.
Pricing a fuel drain on the Volkswagen Jetta
We don't give a fixed price, as two call-outs on the same model can be quite dissimilar. How much got in against the size of the tank, petrol or AdBlue, and where your car is now all matter, but whether the Jetta has been driven or just started affects it most.
We can let you know what is involved in the job when you phone with those details.
Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Jetta: tank queries
Fuel tank capacity of the Volkswagen Jetta: how much does it hold?
It holds 55 litres, and each version we hold data for shares that tank.
With a bigger tank, is petrol less of a problem?
That petrol is still there in a bigger tank, and still reaches the pump once the engine runs, even though a few litres make up less of the whole. Leave your Jetta turned off and draining it gets every bit of that petrol out.
How many diesel versions of the Jetta do you list?
Your badge shows which of the 4 diesel versions of the Jetta in the table above is yours, since we have figures for each.
Wrong fuel in my Volkswagen Jetta: what does that cover?
Petrol counts whatever the type, super unleaded too, and so does AdBlue that was meant for its own dedicated tank. Anything other than diesel in the diesel tank is wrong fuel.
Can you drain the Volkswagen Jetta where it is?
There is no reason to move or start your car. Whether it is left at home or still at the station forecourt, we come to it.
