What the Tank Holds: Petrol in a Diesel Volvo S60

If you have put petrol in a diesel Volvo S60, the size of its fuel tank is among the earliest points worth knowing, as it decides how much of the fuel in there is currently petrol. Our page lists the tank for every version of the Volvo S60 we have figures for, plus the engines it was sold with.

Regardless of what the figure is, there's a single piece of advice after the event. With the engine kept off, ring Petrol in Diesel and the car can be emptied where it is.

Does a little quantity of wrong fuel in your Volvo S60 count?

The proportion of petrol hinges on how full the tank was before you filled up. That's because wrong fuel in your Volvo S60 blends with whatever diesel was still in there. Up to 70 litres fit in your tank. Filling an almost full one with a few litres of unleaded means just a small share of petrol in the whole, while the same quantity in an almost empty tank is much more of what the motor would draw.

People often ask how much petrol is too much. Starting the engine is what takes the blend from your tank and through the pump and your injectors, so the more helpful thing to know is whether it has run.

A fuel drain is the safe option whatever the proportion, and with a modest amount it is usually all your S60 needs.

Fuel tank size and AdBlue in a diesel Volvo S60

AdBlue alters what the size of your tank means. AdBlue is mainly water and does not blend with diesel, so with AdBlue in a diesel Volvo S60, the diesel surrounding it does nothing to dilute it. As it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel pump draws from, even a small volume gets into the fuel line.

AdBlue gives your pump no protection and will not combust. Its water dries out as it stands, leaving urea that forms crystals in the fuel filter and the lines, where it corrodes the metalwork it touches.

The filler for AdBlue, on diesel cars that have it, frequently shares a flap with the diesel one and leads to a second tank. If your S60 has an AdBlue filler, the diesel nozzle is the larger of the two, and the AdBlue cap is normally blue.

How a fuel drain on your Volvo S60 works

Whatever size your tank is on your version, a fuel drain on your Volvo S60 empties all of that, just where your car is sitting. We draw the contaminated fuel out, flush the fuel lines and the filter, and refill with fresh diesel ahead of re-priming your system and firing up the engine.

Left at home or still at the pumps, your S60 gets the same drain. Once we finish this drain, your car is running on fresh diesel and free to drive away.

How AdBlue removal from a diesel Volvo S60 works

AdBlue settles at the bottom of the tank rather than mixing in, so draining it entirely is the opening stage of AdBlue removal from a diesel Volvo S60. If the engine has run, we rinse the lines and your filter through as well and change the fuel filter if it needs it.

This covers AdBlue that has got into your diesel tank. It is not removing or disabling the AdBlue system on the vehicle.

What a fuel drain on the Volvo S60 will cost

The same model can make for very dissimilar call-outs, which is why we don't publish a fixed price. The biggest factor is whether anybody has started or driven the S60. Then comes the amount that went in compared with how large your tank is, what fuel it was, and where the car is at the moment.

We can explain what's involved in this job if you ring with those details.

Petrol in a diesel Volvo S60: tank questions

How many litres is the Volvo S60 fuel tank capacity?

From 68 to 70 litres depending on the version, and each version is in the table above.

With a bigger tank, is petrol less of an issue?

The petrol is still there in a bigger tank, and still gets to your pump once the engine runs, even though a few litres form less of the whole. Keep your S60 switched off and draining it gets every bit of that petrol out.

How many versions of your diesel S60 are in your data?

There are 7 diesel S60 versions in our data, and the model name on your badge shows which row of the table above is yours.

Is it wrong fuel in my Volvo S60 if it's not diesel?

Only diesel belongs in the diesel tank. Petrol of any grade, super unleaded included, is wrong fuel, and so is AdBlue, which belongs in a tank of its own.

Will you drain the Volvo S60 where it stands?

We do. The vehicle doesn't need to be moved or switched on, because we come to it whether it is still at the forecourt or parked at home.
