Petrol in a Diesel Volvo S70: What the Tank Holds

The size of your fuel tank is among the earliest things to know once you have put petrol in a diesel Volvo S70, because the proportion of what is in there that is currently petrol hinges on it. We set out the tank size for each version of the Volvo S70 which our figures cover on this page, along with the motors it came with.

After it has happened, the same advice holds whatever the figure is. As soon as you leave your engine off and phone Petrol in Diesel, we will come and empty the vehicle where it sits.

Wrong fuel in your Volvo S70: what a couple of litres amounts to

How full the tank was when you refuelled decides the proportion of petrol, as wrong fuel in your Volvo S70 mixes with whatever diesel is already there. How much petrol goes to the motor rests a lot on the amount in the tank. The tank takes up to 70 litres, and in a nearly full one a couple of litres stay a minor part of the total, but in a tank sitting near empty the same few litres become a much greater share.

People commonly want to know how much petrol counts as too much. It's more helpful to find out whether the motor has been run, since a running engine is what carries the blend from the tank and through your pump and your injectors.

A drain is the sensible option whatever the share, and with a modest volume it is usually all your S70 needs.

What goes on with AdBlue in a diesel Volvo S70

Where AdBlue is concerned, the fuel tank size works differently. AdBlue is mostly water and doesn't mix with diesel, and so with AdBlue in a diesel Volvo S70, the diesel surrounding it does nothing to weaken it. As it settles to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel pump draws from, even a small amount reaches your fuel lines.

Nothing in AdBlue combusts, and the pump gets no lubrication from it. When its water evaporates, urea is left in the lines and the fuel filter as crystals, and the metal around it is eaten into.

On some diesel cars, AdBlue has a second tank of its own, and its filler often sits alongside the diesel one under the same flap. If your S70 has an AdBlue filler, the diesel nozzle is the larger of the two, and the AdBlue cap is generally blue.

A fuel drain on your Volvo S70, step by step

Whatever size your tank is on your version, a fuel drain on your Volvo S70 clears the lot, just where the car is standing. Pumping out the contaminated fuel comes first, followed by a rinse of the fuel lines and your fuel filter. Then we top up with clean diesel, prime the fuel system and fire up the motor.

It makes no difference whether your S70 is still on the station forecourt or parked on your drive. Once we finish this drain, the vehicle is running on fresh diesel and free to drive away.

What AdBlue removal from a diesel Volvo S70 involves

With AdBlue lying at the base of the tank and not blended in, AdBlue removal from a diesel Volvo S70 begins by draining your tank completely. Where the engine has been run, we flush your lines and the fuel filter through as well and change the fuel filter if it needs it.

Removing or turning off the AdBlue system on your car isn't what this covers. It is about AdBlue that has gone into your diesel tank.

What a fuel drain on the Volvo S70 costs

There is no fixed price listed on this page, since jobs on one model can differ quite a lot. The largest factor is whether anybody has started or driven the S70. Then there is the quantity that went in compared with how big your tank is, which liquid it was, and where the car is now.

We can tell you what is involved in the job if you ring with those details.

Tank questions about petrol in a diesel Volvo S70

How many litres is the Volvo S70 fuel tank capacity?

From 68 to 70 litres according to the version, and every version is listed in the table above.

With a larger tank, is petrol less of a problem?

A larger tank means a few litres make up less of the total, yet that petrol is still in there and still gets to your pump as soon as your engine runs. With your S70 turned off, a drain removes all of that.

Do you list more than one diesel S70?

Your badge tells you which of the 2 diesel versions of the S70 in the table above is yours, since we hold figures for each.

Wrong fuel in my Volvo S70: what does that cover?

Petrol qualifies whatever the grade, super unleaded too, and so does AdBlue that was intended for its own dedicated tank. Everything other than diesel in your diesel tank is wrong fuel.

Will you drain the Volvo S70 where it stands?

Yes, we can. We travel to the car, whether it is still on the station forecourt or left at home, and so it does not need to be shifted or started.
