Petrol in Diesel

Have You Put Petrol in a Diesel Volvo V70?

Anybody who has put petrol in a diesel Volvo V70 without running the motor should keep it turned off, and not run it even to roll it away from the petrol pump. With your engine left off, that petrol stays put inside the tank, and in most cases a fuel drain is all the V70 requires.

There's no reason to shift your Volvo V70 off the forecourt, or from any other place where it came to a stop, since this drain is done by Petrol in Diesel wherever the vehicle stands. We'll go through it with you over the phone, so ring us before attempting anything on your own.

Your first steps after petrol in a diesel V70

  • Don't start the engine, even though a diesel V70 will usually run with petrol inside the tank. It can seem fine for a time, and that is how drivers commonly drive away without realising something is amiss.
  • Turning your ignition on is enough, on plenty of diesels, to set the fuel pump priming and draw fuel from the tank to the injectors, so leave that off too.
  • Topping up with diesel to thin it is a mistake, even with super unleaded, which is petrol too. The tank in the V70 holds up to 73 litres, and every litre of diesel put in is more contaminated fuel for us to empty.
  • If the car is blocking a pump, pop it in neutral and roll the vehicle clear. Forecourt staff are generally happy to help with that.
  • When the badging shows the precise version, for example the V70 2.4D, mention it when you phone 0333 366 0103. Let us know as well which V70 you drive and where it is, about how much petrol was put in and whether the engine has run.

Wrong fuel in your Volvo V70 after the motor has run

The motor is not affected by wrong fuel in your Volvo V70 until it is pulled out of your tank, and starting your engine is what draws it out. A diesel engine relies on its fuel to oil your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors as it passes through them. With petrol diluting the diesel, that lubrication is lost, and driving any distance on it is then what can cause harm.

Look for a safe place to pull in and switch off, when the V70 has already been driven. All the same, we can take all of the tainted fuel out, by emptying your tank and then rinsing your fuel lines and your filter. Lasting damage is very rare when it's caught soon and given a thorough clean.

The V70 2.0D is no different here from any other variant of the V70.

Volvo V70 fuel tank capacity

What counts is how much of your fuel inside your tank is petrol. The same couple of litres matter more when you filled up with your tank close to empty, which is why its capacity makes a difference.

Depending on the version, the Volvo V70 has a tank of 70 to 73 litres.

According to our figures the V70 2.5 TDI has the largest tank and the V70 D5 AWD has the smallest.

The tank in the V70 D3 holds 70 litres.

Working out which diesel V70 you drive

Look for the badge on your boot lid, which generally gives the version, then let us know what it says when you phone.

On the diesel V70, the badging used is TDI.

The smallest motor, 1.6 litres, is on the V70 1.6 DRIVe, and the largest, 2.5 litres, is in the V70 2.5 D.

There are AWD versions on the list as well.

If there is AdBlue in a diesel Volvo V70

Some diesel vehicles carry a blend of water and urea, called AdBlue, in a tank of its own with a separate filler, and use it to clean up their exhaust. Even to move your vehicle, do not turn the key when you've got AdBlue in a diesel Volvo V70 after it went into the wrong filler.

Because it's mainly water, AdBlue doesn't ignite and gives the fuel pump no protection at all. It doesn't blend with diesel either, so it drops to the base of the tank where your pump draws its fuel, and a tank of up to 73 litres does nothing to dilute it as it would dilute petrol.

A modest amount is still drawn into your fuel system. As the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals within the system, including your filter and injectors, and it eats into the metalwork it sits against.

The same fuel flap often covers both fillers, and if the V70 has an AdBlue filler, it may well be next to the diesel one. A blue cap and a nozzle far narrower than diesel typically mark the AdBlue filler.

The fuel drain on your Volvo V70, in order

We carry out a fuel drain on your Volvo V70 where the vehicle stands, and it never needs to be taken to a garage. We begin by finding out what went in and whether the engine has been run, then drain the tank, which on the V70 holds up to 73 litres. Next we clean your fuel pipes and the filter and fill up with fresh diesel, and the system is primed before we start the engine.

When the job is done, the V70 runs on clean diesel and you can drive the car away.

AdBlue removal from a diesel Volvo V70, explained

The stages are the same as draining petrol in AdBlue removal from a diesel Volvo V70. We clear crystals out of the pipes as well when the V70 has been run, and change your fuel filter if needed, since AdBlue settles in the base of your tank rather than mixing in and may leave them behind.

AdBlue removal, as we use it on this page, covers AdBlue that was put in the incorrect filler and has to come out of your diesel tank. It does not cover removing or disabling the AdBlue system on the car.

How much does a fuel drain on the Volvo V70 cost?

A set quote isn't something we publish, since no two jobs involve the same work. It largely comes down to the following:

  • starting or driving the V70, which makes more difference than anything else
  • the size of your tank, set against how much was put in
  • what went in, petrol or AdBlue
  • the location of the V70 and how easily we can reach it with our van

Call with those answers and we will be able to explain what's likely to be involved.

Petrol in a diesel Volvo V70: questions

Do you know the fuel tank capacity of the Volvo V70?

Somewhere from 70 to 73 litres, depending on which variant it is. Each one is listed above.

Can I fill up with diesel if I just put a little petrol in my V70?

We wouldn't recommend it. Adding diesel lowers the proportion of petrol without removing any of it, so the petrol is still in the system when you drive off. A drain takes all of it out, and with a small quantity that is usually all your V70 needs.

Do I have to take my V70 to the Volvo dealer?

You do not need to. We have no link with Volvo or any of its dealers, being independent, and the V70 is emptied and cleaned where you have stopped.

Which V70 I drive: does it matter?

Yes, it does. Our figures include 7 diesel versions of the V70, so let us know which one you drive when you call.

Will my insurance pay for wrong fuel in my Volvo V70?

Some policies carry misfuelling cover and some do not, so it's worth looking at yours. Whichever it is, we come out to empty the car for you.

The diesel went into the AdBlue filler on my V70. What now?

In that case, as well, keep the key out of your ignition. Most vehicles show an alert and enter limp mode if they are driven in that state, and the AdBlue system will need emptying. Let us know which tank the fuel went into when you ring.

Already driven my V70: what do I do?

Look for a safe location to pull over, then turn your engine off and keep the vehicle that way until we arrive. Long-term damage is very uncommon when it's caught soon like this, plus we drain your fuel system and clean it where you have pulled over.
